Palafreno Querciabella 2017

Palafreno ist eine seltene Merlot-Cuvée, des Weinguts Querciabella in der Toskana. Der reiche und elegante Wein entstammt Weinbergen mit niedrigen Erträgen. Der Ausbau in Barriques dauert 18 Monate (25% neues Holz); die besten Teile werden nach 12 Monaten vereint. Palafreno ist ein Wein von mittlerer Reife, der schon in seiner Jugend sehr gut schmeckt.

With only 2,600 bottles made (using very heavy glass), this 100% expression of organic Merlot positions itself at the top of the market in terms of pricing. However, I found the Querciabella 2017 Palafreno to be too ripe and jammy for my tastes. The wine is an exuberant and opulent hot-vintage expression with heavy fruit weight, blackberry tart and cherry confit. The finish is openly sweet and heavy.

The 2017 Palafreno, 100% Merlot, from vineyards in Greve, is a wild, exotic wine that marries the natural richness of the year with the structure of this site. Blackberry, licorice, cloves and menthol all build in a resonant, super-expressive Merlot that will tempt readers with its considerable powers of seduction. The 2017 is classy and supremely elegant. Even so, I wouldn't think of touching a bottle any time soon. - AG 09/2021
