Das Château Guillot Clauzel ist eine kleine Parzelle von 2.4 Hektaren und liegt wunderbar am Südhang des berühmten Plateaus von Pomerol: ein Terroir aus Kies und Lehm, das zu 80% mit alten Merlot-Trauben bepflanzt ist, ergänzt mit Cabernet Franc. Der Betrieb wurde Anfang der 90er Jahre von Paul und Jacqueline Clauzel gegründet und 2002 von ihrem Sohn Etienne Clauzel übernommen. Guillaume Thienpont - der Sohn von Alexandre Thienpont, der Vieux Château Certan und Le Pin vinifiziert - hat die operative Leitung 2019 übernommen um dem Wein eine neue Dynamik zu verleihen, welche mit dem hervorragenden Potenzial der Produktion im Einklang steht. Er beaufsichtigt insbesondere die Vinifizierung, die parzellenweise in kleinen Edelstahltanks durchgeführt wird. Der hohe Anteil an Cabernet Franc (bis zu 30 % der Assemblage) verleiht dem Wein Spannung und Frische sowie feine blumige Nuancen.

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Guillot Clauzel has turned out beautifully. Wafting from the glass with aromas of dark cherries, plums and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly layered and fleshy, with a vibrant core of fruit, polished tannins and a penetrating finish. The 2020 Guillot-Clauzel has come together beautifully since I tasted it en primeur. Most notably, the oak (50% new) has integrated very nicely, even better than I expected to be honest. Spice, pepper, graphite and scorched earth lend an exotic, deep quality to the aromatic profile that is quite intriguing. As always, Guillot-Clauzel has a certain nerviness in its tannin that makes it a Pomerol more of structure than of seductive charm. Even so, the 2020 is quite impressive. The deep ruby/purple-hued 2020 Château Guillot-Clauzel has a classy, textbook Pomerol perfume of ripe red and blue fruits, leafy herbs, sappy spring flowers, and chocolate. With medium to full-bodied richness, it has a wonderful sense of elegance, polished tannins, and the depth as well as purity that's common from this appellation in 2020.
