Petite parcelle de 2,4 hectares, le Château Guillot Clauzel est merveilleusement situé sur la pente sud du fameux plateau de Pomerol : un terroir de graves et argiles, planté à 80% de vieux merlots, avec un complément de cabernet franc. Fondée au début des années 90 par Paul et Jacqueline Clauzel, l’exploitation a ensuite été reprise par leur fils Etienne Clauzel en 2002, poursuivant le travail de ses parents. Devant l’arrivée de la troisième génération, la famille Clauzel souhaite insuffler à son cru une nouvelle dynamique en phase avec l’excellent potentiel de la production. Guillaume Thienpont - le fils d’Alexandre Thienpont qui vinifie Vieux Château Certan et Le Pin - en a accepté la direction opérationnelle en 2019. Il supervise notamment les vinifications, réalisées de façon parcellaire en petites cuves inox. La forte proportion de cabernet franc (jusqu’à 30% de l’assemblage) apporte au vin tension et fraîcheur, ainsi que de fines nuances florales.

This wine is now being made by Guillaume Thienpont, from Vieux Chateau Certan. The blend this year is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, harvested between the 23rd of September and 4th of October. The alcohol came in at 14.4% and the pH is 3.7. It is being aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Guillot Clauzel bursts from the glass with flamboyant notes of plum preserves, baked black cherries and mulberries with hints of dark chocolate, licorice and black peppercorns plus a waft of smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers open-knit, black fruit flavors with plush tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long and juicy. The 2019 Guillot-Clauzel is a dark, sumptuous wine. Black cherry, chocolate, dark spice, menthol, licorice and inky dark fruit infuse this plush, succulent Pomerol with tons of depth and character. Soft, open-knit and plush in the glass, this under-the-radar Pomerol is absolutely exquisite. Guillaume Thienpont took over the farming and winemaking at this small domaine in 2018. Extremely aromatic with violets and other flowers, together with some blackberries and dried fruit, such as figs. Dried olives, too. Full-bodied and beautifully ripe with a rich palate and fine, chewy tannins. Yet, it turns fine and polished at the end. Made by Guillaume Thienpoint, the son of the winemaker at Le Pin and VCC. A blend of 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. 5,500 bottles made from only 2.5 hectares. Try after 2027. - 01/2021
