Utilizing around 40% whole bunch fruit, the 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a comparatively rich bouquet with layers of macerated red cherry fruit mixed with blueberry, the new oak coming through in pronounced fashion. The palate is sweet on the entry with grainy tannin, red cherries and wild strawberry, as well as a touch of orange rind with a spice note towards the structured finish that is Mazoyères-like in style. Deep ruby-red. Musky aromas of black cherry, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate. Powerful, densely packed and penetrating, showing less early sweetness than the Lavaux-Saint-Jacques but coming across as remarkably thick and full for a 2014. A bit oaky in the early going but one can already appreciate this wine's grand cru depth. Finishes with big, dusty, even tannins and terrific chewy persistence. This wine boasts lovely balance but will nonetheless require extended aging. - ST 12/2016
